PGT Door Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT builds several door lines that show up constantly in Miami homes: the WinGuard series (their impact-rated line, common in coastal and post-Andrew construction), the SpectraGuard series, and the ClassicVue and Eze-Breeze lines for enclosed patios and sunrooms. The part that fits one series usually will not fit another – WinGuard rollers are built heavier to carry the added glass weight, and SpectraGuard hardware uses different hole spacing than ClassicVue. The fastest way to identify what you have is to look at the glass etching in the corner of the door panel, which shows the PGT series name and the manufacture date. If the etching has worn off, we measure the roller housing, the hinge offset, and the frame channel width to match the part the way the factory would.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for PGT doors, we stock genuine PGT components and, where they exist, a short list of aftermarket equivalents we’ve tested in Miami conditions. Some aftermarket rollers have nylon wheels that flat-spot within two years of daily use; the PGT-spec wheels hold up better in heat and humidity. But some aftermarket weatherstripping kits actually outperform the original PGT material, especially on older WinGuard doors where the original gasket compressed permanently over time. Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

• The door drags or feels heavy when you slide it. Rollers wear flat over time, especially on west-facing doors in Miami where afternoon heat accelerates the nylon breakdown. A door that used to glide but now needs two hands is a roller problem, not a track problem, most of the time.
• The door won’t stay latched or the latch scrapes the keeper. Salt air corrodes the latch spring and the metal face of the keeper. We see this constantly within a few miles of the coast in Miami – the latch still works, but it’s fighting the corrosion every time you close it.
• You can see daylight or feel air moving around the door edges. PGT weatherstripping has a lifespan of roughly 7 to 10 years in Miami’s UV and humidity. Once it’s compressed or cracked, the seal is gone, and your air conditioning bill notices before you do.
• The door panel sits lower on one side. This usually means a hinge or roller mount has shifted, often because the frame settled or the original install was shimmed incorrectly. When a PGT door is out of square, the hardware wears twice as fast on the loaded side.
• A loud pop or snap when closing. That’s often a roller bearing giving up or a keeper screw shearing. The door may still close, but every use after that is doing damage to the track and the frame channel – and the repair gets more involved the longer it waits.
