Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru builds several door lines, and the compatibility gotchas are real. The Classic-Craft and Fiber-Classic lines are the ones we see most in Miami homes, followed by Smooth-Star and Pulse. Each line uses its own slab thickness, hinge prep, and weatherstripping profile. A slab from a Classic-Craft line will not drop into a Smooth-Star frame without modifying the hinge mortises, and that is where a lot of weekend installations go sideways.

The surest way to identify your door is to check the sticker on the hinge edge of the slab. Therma-Tru prints the model line, size, and manufacturing date right on it. If the sticker is gone, measure the slab thickness. Classic-Craft slabs run a full 2 inches. Smooth-Star runs 1-3/4 inches. That one measurement eliminates half the wrong-part calls we get. We typically install OEM Therma-Tru components when the homeowner wants the manufacturer warranty intact. When a customer needs to control cost, we will quote a quality aftermarket equivalent side by side on paper so they can see exactly what they are buying. You should know that OEM Therma-Tru weatherstripping and sweeps are not the place to save money. The aftermarket generics harden in Miami heat within two years and then you are back to the same air leak.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing

• Daylight visible around the jamb when the door is closed. The weatherstripping has compressed or the slab has shifted. Either way, conditioned air is leaving the house now, and Miami’s humidity is coming in.
• The door rubs the frame in one corner, usually in late summer. Wood frames move. If the threshold was not set square and shimmed correctly, the slab will bind as the house settles through wet and dry seasons.
• A loose or sagging hinge that needs the door lifted to latch. The hinge screws have pulled or the slab has dropped. Lifting the knob to close the door is the tell. The fix is re-setting the hinges, not tightening a screw that has already stripped.
• Condensation or softness at the bottom rail. South Florida rain hits the threshold from the outside and splash-back rots the bottom of a door that was never properly sealed. On a Therma-Tru slab this shows up as swelling at the bottom corners.
• Drafts you can feel standing in socks at the door. The sweep or threshold insert has worn out. In July, you are paying to air-condition the outside.

The common thread in every one of these is that the part failed slowly and was ignored until the air bill or the binding got bad enough to call about. We would rather you call at the first sign.

A homeowner can safely check a few things: look for daylight around the jamb, run a hand along the sweep, check the hinge screws with a screwdriver to see if any are stripped. Those checks will tell you what is wrong, which is useful whether you call us or not. What goes wrong with DIY Therma-Tru work is almost always the frame, not the slab. If the door is binding, the fix is removing the casing, re-shimming the jamb, and re-setting the door so it sits true. That is skilled work. Get it wrong and the door will never close right, and you will be dealing with the same problem in a bigger form after a summer of Miami heat and humidity.
